by admin February 9, 2022
written by admin

This luxury gorilla safari starts in Rwanda with the visit to the mountain gorillas in the mist offering the luxury gorilla safari adventure and it is so sweet and full of African jungle experiences only you can measure. The focus of this gorilla trip is a visit to Volcanoes National Park and track the endangered mountain gorillas, then spend an hour in their presence watching them go on their daily chores that reflect human like cultures.

Logistically this safari itinerary requires a morning or early afternoon arrival flight into Rwanda as on day 1 you have a guided city tour around Kigali and a visit to the genocide memorial center before driving down to the forests of Volcanoes National Park.

Start your second day of your private luxury gorilla safari adventure after an early breakfast and take a country road trip north-west to Volcanoes National Park where the mountain gorilla flourishes. In case you didn’t have an opportunity to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, this can be done in the morning before you head into the countryside.

The gorilla trek itself is between 3 and 5 hours or longer. It is well worth it and the experience of a lifetime for you. Simply a most amazing and most memorable experience and you will have that experience twice, in two different countries and locations.

After being fill with the Rwanda gorilla safari experience and stay at the Virunga safari lodge then cross to Kisoro in Uganda and then drive to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and stay at Mount Gahinga Lodge as you wait for your next day gorilla trekking experience in the mist. This park is similar to the Volcanoes and Virunga as it is part of the Virunga massifs. Therefore, on Uganda side any one taking the light gorilla photography it is Mgahinga to go. As we are taking luxury gorilla safari in East Africa and staying at the Volcanoes collection continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for your third gorilla safari experience in the mist and stay at Bwindi Lodge.

You will be escorted into the misty jungles to find your nemesis. These gentle giants light up all your natural love for the wild and alter all your perceptions about wild creatures that occupy jungles across the world. It’s a moment you want to keep forever so make sure you’re ready to be rewarded your courage to come to Africa. You will not stay with them for more than one hour, the intelligent guys think you may agitate their inner beings and maybe transfer some diseases if you stay longer.

After your encounter, you’ll be led back to the lodge but first, setup yourself a cool picnic spot in the jungle and have your packed lunch.

You can choose to take the Batwa trail if you still got the guts for it. The Batwa are the native tribe that occupied the jungle before it was turned into a National Park and closed off to them. Today they occupy boundaries of the forest and showcase their cultures to visitors. In our part to support the Batwa communities, we take our visitors through some of their prepared showcases.

Packing List Gorilla Photo Safari in Uganda & Rwanda

by admin February 20, 2021
written by admin

To visit these shy endangered Mountain Gorillas in the Jungle you must buy a permit which costs $700 USD per person in Uganda and $1500 USD per person in Rwanda and always this money is paid in advance to book for your permit, if you are to visit both Uganda and Rwanda you have to apply for a multiple Visa which costs $100 USD per person, lastly you must be with a valid yellow fever vaccination Card to be issued entry permission.

Packing List for Gorilla photo Safari in Uganda & Rwanda.

Cameras:

Decent quality digital SLR are the best tool for the job in most mountain gorilla photo Safaris. If you are lucky enough to own a full frame SLR then this is best due to the higher performance in low light situations that you are likely to find yourself in. However, that is not to say that a cropped sensor will not do a decent job for you.

It is worth noting that on a cropped sensor SLR your zoom lenses will be extended depending on the size of the sensor. A 1.6x sensor for example will multiply the focal length of your lenses by that factor, this can be especially useful for other parts of your safari, and for example, a 200mm lens on a 1.6 x sensor would be equivalent to a 320mm zoom (200 x 1.6 = 320.

Lenses:

When selecting lenses many people elect for long telephoto zooms when traveling on safari. While these are often the best tool for the job when you are in some places like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, they can be a bit too much when visiting the mountain gorillas. The reason for this is that, ideally, you should be around 7 meters from the gorillas, which is significantly closer than you are likely to be to a leopard in a tree.

If somebody else was paying for it (and carrying it, I would love to go with 2 x Canon 1dx bodies fitted with Canon EOS battery grips, a medium telephoto such as a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM coupled with a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM. It is all well and good saying that this is best or that is the best, but I shot exclusively on a Canon 50D with a Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3, which is significantly cheaper, and lighter.

Water proof Bags:

You should come with Water proof bags for your photography Cameras as chances are high rain find you in the Jungle while on the photography excursion and this best to protect your camera from Water.

Other Gears:

Strong Hiking Shoes, trousers, long sleeved shirts, Jackets & jumpers and insect repellents should not miss on your parking list as the weather conditions tend to change.

by admin September 20, 2019
written by admin

Lake Mutanda is a hidden jewel in the mountainous land scape of south-western Uganda, in Kisoro district and its one of the most scenic lakes in Africa, located in a dramatic land scape of lush and verdant sprawling highlands.

The 15 islands of Lake Mutanda are hardly touched, with only one inhabited by a local community and few have been tiled to grow crops & tree plantations.

There are also two islands that earned the name punishment islands for being the places where criminals and the misfits of the society were taken and then dumped a punishment.

Unmarried pregnant girls, the elderly with no one to care for them, criminals such as thieves, and unwanted people from the region would be tied & taken to the island and left to die there. There are many activities that you can engage in at Lake Mutanda as below

Boat rides

This is the main activity that offers a mind-refreshing experience as you ride through the tranquil and cool waters of this Lake as you explore some of the riveting wildlife species like the African Claw-less otter and several bird species, the spectacular views of the Landscapes and the astonishing scenery of the surrounding areas.

Boat rides within this Lake are conducted mainly conducted in the morning before the water of Lake Mutanda changes course and is still calm without tides.

Bird watching

Interesting bird species can be sighted within this lake including the Pin-tailed Whydah, Kites, Malachite Kingfisher, weaver birds, Great Cormorant, Ibis, the Grey-crowned cranes, pied kingfishers and sun-birds among others.

This enables tourists to combine other activities with bird watching. Imagine yourself relaxing and you spot birds and hear sweet melodies of birds, this is what awaits you around Lake Mutanda.

Relaxing and chilling

It is very relaxing when you visit a place like Lake Mutanda where all you will see is nature and hear the sounds and melodies of the birds.

You can just sit and relax on the Verandas of the Safari lodges for example Mutanda lake Resort as you enjoy the spectacular views of the lake, or take photos of the area around.

Nature walks

There is nothing as interesting as hiking around a Lake that is surrounded by undulating hills, beautiful Islands and local communities that live around Lake Mutanda in order to explore life in a typical rural Ugandan Village.

Interact with the Batwa community

Tourists who visit Lake Mutanda can also visit the Batwa communities especially within Southern sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and also the more exciting Batwa trail around Mgahinga National Park.

When you visit these communities, you will be able to learn about their ancient lifestyles and cultures when they still lived in the forests or get entertained in their invigorating traditional dances.

Bwindi is an old forest which survived the massive plate shift that lead to the formation of the beautiful western rift. Best known for its gorilla trekking safaris, and within this verdant forest you will also find a deep swamp.

There are over 340 bird species and 310 species of trees several butterflies and the ferns. Other wildlife living within this forest include: chimpanzees and this is the only place where you will find the chimpanzees happily co-existing with the mountain gorillas.

Others include Vervet Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Red-Tailed Monkeys, the Pottos, Duiker Antelopes, Black & White Colobus Monkeys, Civets, L Hoests Monkeys, Blue, Bush babies, Bush pigs, Forest Hogs, Side-Striped Jackals, Clawless Otter, Golden Cats, Genets as well as bats among several others.

The park has got a lot to do during your visit. From the popular gorilla treks to nature walks through well-developed trails, you will enjoy explorations through the impenetrable jungles of Bwindi.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is an outdoor paradise for wildlife watchers, hiking enthusiasts, family vacationers, outdoor lovers, and photographers of all skill levels.

Gorilla Trekking

The Mountain Gorillas are among Uganda’s top tourist attraction. While trekking these great apes, the experience and excitement you encounter while with them is really worthwhile.

Tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest can be conducted all year round. Most gorilla trekkers prefer visiting the mountain gorillas from June to September as well as from December up to February.

You can visit Bwindi at any time of the year, the low season calls for cheaper gorilla permit price but generally there is small difference in the seasons.

Gorilla Habituation

Besides the popular gorilla trekking adventure in Bwindi, the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced gorilla habituation since January 2014. This activity can only be done in Bwindi Forest!

The number of tourists is limited to 4 only who can spend four hours observing gorillas excluding time spent when searching for them. Gorillas are still wild or semi-habituated and unstable.

Viewing them depends on the mood they are found in that very day; however, researchers, guides and trackers are experienced with ethics of gorilla behavior to give you a memorable gorilla habituation experience.

You begin with briefing from the guides at Ruhija gorilla center, and then you’re led by rangers hike through forests. Once gorillas are located, tourists are helped and involved in the habituation process by researchers, guides and trackers.

You’ll spend four hours observing, photographing and learning how gorilla behavior adopts to human presence. Upon return from the forest you’re awarded a gorilla habituation experience certificate for your lifetime memories.

Bird watching

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. It homes over 351 species of birds including 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as Rusty-faced woodland Warbler, Bar-tailed Trogon, Short-tailed Warbler, Kivu Ground Thrush and White-tailed Blue Monarch among others, which are hard to spot in any other part of East Africa. This Park was also selected as Africa’s number one birding site.

The Batwa experience

The Batwa were the indigenous inhabitants of the forest and had lived there thousands of years even before the Bantu people (considered the cultivators of land) arrived.

The Batwa commonly referred as the pygmies were initially hunter-gatherers and settled in the jungles of South-western Uganda and beyond. This Batwa experience involves tourists exploring these people’s ancient way of life.

Forest walk

A forest walk discovers all the secret treasures in Bwindi, which most clients have frequently missed out. Forest walks can be very essential as an additional therapy for those with high levels of stress.

To retain energy, hikers are reminded to bring along enough drinking water, snacks and soft foods which are energy giving as well as putting on hiking boots, gloves, huts to help in the sun, long sleeved shirts and trousers to control the unpredictable forest weather.

Things to Do in Mgahinga National Park

by admin September 20, 2019
written by admin

Gorilla Trekking

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to some of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas making gorilla trekking a must do activity while at the park.

The trek commences at about 8am and lasts 2 to 4 hours, which duration is mostly dependent on the location of the gorillas or how far they moved in their search for food.

There are a few guidelines to keep in mind before you go gorilla trekking which you will be acquainted with at the orientation but we picked a few to keep in mind before then.

Gorillas can catch human diseases so if you have a cold or other infectious diseases, it is wise that you save the adventure for after your recovery.

If you have to ease yourself while gorilla trekking, all waste must be buried 30cm deep. Flash photography should not be used and all trekkers should be at least 15 years of age.

Only 8 people per trekking group are allowed. Depending on how far the gorillas moved, your reward for the trek maybe a silver-back out of the 5 in the one family of Gorillas found in the park.

This ought to remind you that by trekking you have a chance to see the gorillas but it is not a guaranteed that you will see them.

Volcano Climbing:

The amazing thing about this park is that you can combine all kinds of activities here including the climbing of 3 majestic Virunga Volcanoes – and each of the  volcanoes can be climbed in one day – one does not have the added expenses such as hiring porters, tents, bringing along food for the climb.

Mount Muhavura is the highest of them all with the advantage of seeing the other Virunga Mountains from its peak.

It can be seen from as far as Kisoro town and is justifiably called the guide given how it leads one to the rest of the mountains in the ranges.

Mount Sabinyo is a gateway to Rwanda and the DRC while in Uganda; at its peak you are geographically standing in Rwanda, Uganda and The DRC at the same time!

The way to the summit of Sabinyo is filled with mushy vegetation whose uncomfortable impact can be reduced by dressing appropriately in waterproof hiking boots.

Climbing up Mount Gahinga on the other hand requires a hike through a bamboo forest. All three of these mountains can be climbed in a day each up to their summits as long as you are in good physical shape.

The Batwa Trail encounter

For generations, Mgahinga’s dense forests were home to the indigenous Batwa – hunter-gatherers and fierce warriors who depended on the forest for shelter, food and medicine.

Now they lead visitors through the forests and introduce them to their old home – and the techniques they used to survive in it.

A Batwa trail experience is an activity that takes you through their history and transition over time. The Garama Cave, a very sacred piece of Batwa history is a good place to start.

It is in this cave that they were able to hide from Bantu invasion many years back. The ease with which they bustle through the forest and glide uphill is awe striking and a reminder that east or west, home is best to the Batwa.

Birding

Birding is one interesting activity to do in Mgahinga gorilla national park since over 115 species of interesting birds are habituated by the entire features of the forest that include lakes, the dormant volcanoes, caves and the entire bamboo forests.

Mgahinga gorilla national park offers one of the best birding in Uganda with its registered species of birds that exceed 115 hence taking most beautiful scenery in the gorge between Gahinga and Sabinyo, hike through the bamboo forest, and in the montane forest that habitats beautiful Rwenzori turaco, Mgahinga gorilla national park’s extinct volcanoes bare bamboo forests that habitat different species of birds and the lava tubes that create caves which also happen to habitat other kinds of bird species which offer an extra scenery to the tourists.

Uganda happens to be one blessed country that habitats different species of birds as they are occupying different bird sanctuaries and forests across the country plus seasonal birds that visit the showers of Lake Victoria.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Mgahinga National Park offers the chance to track the golden monkeys (Ceropithecus Kandti) sometimes referred to as a distinctive race of the more widespread blue monkey, a little known bamboo-associated taxa primate listed as ‘endangered’ by the World Conservation Union.

Endemic to the Albertine Rift, the golden monkey is characterized as a bright orange-gold body, cheeks and tail, contrasting with its black limbs, crown and tail end.

The family is very much used to our presence now, allowing us to have an insight into their daily lives. The monkeys dictate how the day is going to be, and no day is ever the same in the forest.

We just never know how the working day is going to turn out, and this is what makes the experience so exciting. You will encounter challenges regularly. One of our biggest problems is the weather.

Trekking at an altitude of around 2,500 meters you will encounter strong winds, heavy rainfall and extreme coldness, so is the best place to trek the golden monkey or gorillas though not reliable.

Batwa Cultural Tours in Uganda and Rwanda

by admin March 1, 2019
written by admin

Batwa People were great local hunters and gatherers who migrated from the Ituri forest reserve of Democratic Republic of Congo in search of wild animals for hunting, these people moved in groups following trails in the great forests of the Virunga Massif and after their migration some settled in the western wing of Uganda and the other settled in the Rwanda.

These people were great hunters who used to feed on wild meat, used forests as their shelter through sleeping in branches of large trees, caves and more, they also used tree leaves as their medicine. Back cloth was their main wearing gear which they manufactured from special tree capping using their local manufacturing tools; they produced fire out of stone using stone age tools.

These people were shy since they were spending most of the times in the forests so they were not used to human beings but now there are upgrading into normal civilized human beings.

After the establishment of national parks in places occupied by Batwa people an order was issued for them to vacate these places such that they are gazetted for the conservation of different wildlife primates and species, this made them feel discriminated from the society but later they got used to the society after frequent visits to their societies by people from different countries.

Where to go for Batwa people in Uganda & Rwanda

In Uganda these people after their migration from Democratic Republic of Congo they settled in Western wing of Uganda near national parks like Semliki National Park, Mountain Rwenzori National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Mgahinga National Park with Mgahinga being the major place to see these Batwa people.

Many tourists traveling to Uganda with the option of doing gorilla tours in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park always experience the Batwa trail experience and this is a full day adventure experiencing the history and current life of the once forest dwellers.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the Western part of Uganda near Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda and Virunga National Park of Democratic Republic of Congo inclusive of the Virunga Massif; it is characterized with tropical rain forest and bamboo forest where Golden monkeys are residents.

Although it’s mostly known for the shy endangered mountain gorillas but it’s the only place to do the Batwa cultural experience in Uganda, this Batwa cultural experience involves visiting these people in their local communities and share with them through experiencing their ways of living, participating in cultural performances like dances, use of their local tools like hunting tools including spears, bow, stone age tools and more. This Batwa Cultural Experience in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park goes for a full day and it costs $80 USD per person to participate in it.

For Rwanda when these people migrated from Democratic Republic of Congo, they settled near Volcanoes National Park which is Rwanda’s top and popular destination to visit mostly known for the Shy endangered Mountain Gorillas.

If you are interested of the Batwa people in Rwanda are found in the IbyI’wacu Cultural Village, this village is where the Batwa people do all their activities which involves cultural performances like dances, practicing on how to use their local tools, simple agricultural practices and more therefore visitors to this village are entertained with cultural dances and singing from these people, they are allowed to engage in some activities like putting on their cultural wearing gears, practicing on how to use their local tools like hunting tools they used for hunting, stone age tools they used for production of fire and more. This IbyI’wacu Cultural experience costs $20 USD person and its mostly done on your way back from Volcanoes National Park.

For an amazing Batwa Cultural Experience in Uganda and Rwanda strategically located in the Eastern part of the African Continent do not miss out Mgahinga National Park in the Western part of Uganda and IbyI’wacu Cultural Village in the Northern part of Rwanda Ruhengeri Province.
